TUPELO – Major roadwork in Tupelo today will partially close one street and one intersection, forcing some motorists to find alternate routes and others to use extra caution while driving.
The east corner of the intersection at South Green and South Gloster streets will be closed from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. today and Thursday in conjunction with the ongoing project to widen South Gloster.
“They have to dig down and replace some of the subgrade and pave it,” said Phillip Harbor, Public Works Department project manager for the Major Thoroughfare Program. “We’ll have detour signs and flag men to direct traffic.”
Motorists will be able to use the intersection during the evening hours.
The South Gloster Street widening project began last year and is scheduled for completion Dec. 31.
On the north side of Tupelo, the city will partially close Mount Vernon Road from Pecan Grove Road to the U.S. 78 bridge. The closure, which started Tuesday, is slated to end at 5 p.m. today.
Workers are digging out and repairing road base failures in preparation for a milling-and-overlay project, said city spokeswoman Annabeth Wyatt.
“Please use extreme caution while traveling through the project area as flaggers will be present,” Wyatt said. “One lane will remain open to traffic but delays should be expected.”
