Trial in spilled-drink killing set to begin

JACKSON — The man accused of killing a Jackson teenager after an argument at a Memorial Day party over a spilled drink is set to go to trial Monday in Hinds County Circuit Court.

The Clarion-Ledger reports 33-year-old Joseph Bennett is one of four men charged in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Cordarel Brown.

Bennett, the alleged gunman, faces life in prison if convicted of murder.

A second man accused in the killing, 29-year-old Randy Johnson, is charged with murder and aggravated assault. His trial is scheduled to start next week.

Eighteen-year-old Charlie Taylor was convicted in September of murder and aggravated assault and sentenced to life plus 90 years.

The fourth suspect, 33-year-old James Warren, pleaded guilty to being an accessory and received a five-year sentence.
