TUPELO – After 12 weeks of hard work, teams of friends, colleagues and family members will weigh in today to close out the Trim Down, Tone Up Tupelo challenge.
Teams can see how much weight they’ve lost as a group when they hit the scales for a final time between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Tupelo City Hall.
“So far we’ve had a good response,” said Hank Boerner, co-chairman of the Mayor’s Healthy City task force, which organized the campaign.
Boerner has been weighing teams from participating employers, like North Mississippi Medical Center. The results per person, he said, average 1-2 pounds a week.
“It’s been a healthy weight loss,” Boerner said.
In January, 151 teams joined the challenge. Boerner hopes at least 75 teams will arrive for the final weigh-in.
The results of the Trim Down, Tupelo will be announced at 5:30 p.m. March 23 at Tupelo City Hall. The team that loses the biggest percentage of weight wins a free cooking demonstration at A Cook’s Place and recognition at the Tupelo City Council Meeting.
Every team that weighs out is in the running for door prizes, regardless of their weight loss. Winners of individual door prizes don’t have to be present at the March 23 event.
One lucky team will get dinner with Mayor Jack Reed Jr. For that prize, Boerner said, at least one member of the team must be present to win.
At the awards ceremony, the task force will also announce what’s next for a healthier Tupelo, a community fitness surprise that will be open to everyone, Boerner said.
