Troopers hand out 6,300 citations

JACKSON – The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol issued more than 6,300 citations on interstates and state highways from the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend on Friday until Sunday night.

Troopers say a Gautier man was charged with two counts of felony DUI causing death in a Sunday accident that killed two people in Pascagoula.

Police say a vehicle driven by Orlando Pereira Martinez collided with a car at a U.S. Highway 90 intersection.

Since Friday, the Highway Patrol reported 144 wrecks on state roadways.

Last year, there were 71 crashes and two fatalities during the entire four-day holiday period, and 9,775 citations were issued.
