TRUCK DRIVER KILLED IN AFTERNOON ACCIDENT

ASHLAND – A Lee County truck driver died in a fiery crash Wednesday afternoon after he lost control of his tractor-trailer rig and ran into a utility pole.

The impact caused the vehicle to catch on fire, trapping the driver inside.

Danny E. Malone, 48, Baldwyn, died at the scene, said Benton County Medical Examiner Bob Riles.

The wreck occurred about 5:40 p.m. on state Highway 4 about four miles east of the Marshall-Benton county line and about eight miles west of Ashland.

Malone, who was a driver for Hill Brothers Construction Co. in Falkner, was headed east with a load of concrete culverts and piping when he lost control of his truck in a curvy section of the roadway and hit a utility pole.

Some Ashland residents were without electricity for several hours, a Benton County sheriff’s dispatcher said.

Officials had not determined a cause for the accident late Wednesday. It was still being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Benton County Sheriff’s Department.
