TUPELO – Tickets now are on sale for the 2010 United Way campaign kickoff, with guest speaker Leigh Anne Tuohy, the inspiration behind the book and the movie, “The Blind Side.”
With the hopes that more people would be able to attend an evening event, the United Way of Northeast Mississippi has moved the traditional breakfast kickoff to a dinner.
The event is Thursday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. at the BancorpSouth Arena.
Dinner is $5 for students and $25 for general admission. Reserved seating is available for $50.
The United Way also is offering a meet-and-greet time with Tuohy for $100 before the event. The $100 ticket includes heavy hors d’oeuvres at the BancorpSouth Conference Center and reserved seating at the arena.
Tuohy is a former Ole Miss cheerleader and lives in Memphis with her husband, Sean Tuohy.
Sandra Bullock earlier this year won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Tuohy in “The Blind Side,” in which Tuohy adopts Michael Oher, a homeless teenager who becomes a football star.
The United Way of Northeast Mississippi in 2009 surpassed the group’s goal and raised $2.2 million, the second largest amount in the history of the organization.
The money is used to support 61 health and human services agencies in Lee, Chickasaw, Itawamba, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tishomingo and Union counties. Agencies include The Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels.
