TUPELO – The Tupelo Airport Authority was officially notified in a letter dated Tuesday that it was under consideration.
The FAA last month issued a list of airports across the country that had fewer than 150,000 operations and fewer than 10,000 boardings that it said it would consider closing because of budget considerations.
“We anticipate we will cease to fund on-site air traffic control services at the vast majority of these facilities,” the FAA said in its letter.
The agency said it would review any locations where the “national interest would be adversely affected” by tower closure, and that it was unable to consider local community impact that doesn’t affect the national interest.
The final list of closures will be made March 18, the FAA said.
