Tupelo Board to discuss Ellis testimony Wednesday

TUPELO – The Tupelo School Board has called a special meeting for 10 a.m. Wednesday to discuss a personnel matter involving former choral director Calvin Ellis.
The board might announce at that meeting its decision on whether or not to reinstate Ellis, who was fired on Oct. 28 and presented with a list of 23 charges against him. Ellis has contested those charges, and a public personnel hearing was held over three days in December, January and February.
Wednesday’s meeting will be held at the Hancock Leadership Center. The board may decide to discuss the matter further in executive session and may not vote on the matter. Whenever it takes a vote on Ellis’s future, it would have to do that in open session.
Ellis and his attorney, David Butts, gave their closing statements to the school board on Monday. It is the school board’s responsibility to uphold or reverse the administration’s decision to terminate Ellis.
