TUPELO – The Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association is gearing up for the 13th annual Chili Fest on Friday.
The lunch event is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the dinner event runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Everything takes place on Broadway between Main and Troy streets.
“We have 33 teams participating but we’ve sold all 40 spaces,” said Allie West, program associate for the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association. “Some teams purchased more than one booth space. They’ve gotten really creative this time. I know we have at least 10 new teams and we’re really excited about that.”
Live entertainment will be provided by acoustic guitarist Tatum Shappley at lunch, and 2 Drink Minimum, a local band, will perform in the evening.
Lunch tickets are $5 and include a bowl of chili, a drink and fixings from Cotton Bowl Catering (Bar-B-Q by Jim). Tickets for the evening event are $10 for adults and include the chili with fixings, a drink and tasting tickets to sample chili prepared by the different teams. Beer may be purchased for an additional charge. Evening tickets are $5 for children 12 and under.
Trophies will be awarded for best chili (first and second place), most original recipe, most unique taste, best presentation, team spirit, best costumes, most creative tent, most original theme and the people’s choice.
“First place is the big award, not the people’s choice,” West said. “We have a panel of judges come in and do a blind judging for first and second place, most unique taste and most original recipe awards. They’ll sample all the chili and have no idea whose it is. The people’s choice is more of a popularity contest.”
