TUPELO – The City Council on Tuesday approved the selection of Engineering Solutions Inc. for design work on a $2.9 million road project.
It was a 6-1 vote with Ward 3 Councilman Jim Newell opposing.
ESI, which is based in Tupelo, was selected by an independent committee from a pool of five firms seeking the job. The Mississippi Department of Transportation must now sign off before a contract is signed.
MDOT, which is overseeing the project, awarded the city a $2.3 million grant for the project last year. It will fund major improvements to Main Street from downtown to the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum.
The project is spearheaded by the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association with assistance from the city.
