TUPELO – A new city-sponsored group will take charge of this year’s Veterans Day ceremony, as well as handle all future communitywide military memorials.
The Veterans Council formed last month under the umbrella of the Tupelo Parks and Recreation Department’s Sports Council. Members of the group include representatives from area veterans organizations like the American Legion, VFW and the Marine Corps League.
“The big reason for it is the observances we have,” said Dick Hill, a Marine Corps League member who serves on the Veterans Council.
“I don’t think it comes under the auspices of the Park and Rec Department to be responsible for the ceremonies to be held out there,” Hill said, “so they wanted a group of veterans out there to be responsible for that.”
In addition to organizing ceremonial events, the new council will plan the second phase of the city’s Veterans Memorial, located at Veterans Park in east Tupelo.
Parks and Recreation Director Don Lewis said the group officially formed in September but had been informally active since the debut of the Veterans Memorial project about three years ago.
That project helped plan and raise money for the memorial, which was dedicated in the spring of 2008.
Lewis said it was important to get the group organized in an official capacity so it can continue to plan events, raise money and advise the city on veterans affairs.
“We’re in the process now of enhancing the park with a big pavilion,” said Veterans Council member Leon Marcy. “We’ll be starting a money raiser soon, and we have a program lined up for this Veterans Day.”
