Tupelo Police investigate wreck involving officer

TUPELO – A Tupelo law enforcement officer is under investigation by the police department after a weekend car crash.
During a council work session earlier this week, Tupelo City Councilman Willie Jennings discussed a wreck that took place on Robert E. Lee Drive on Nov. 26 when a vehicle crashed into a vacant building.
Jennings said rumors are surfacing about what happened after the crash.
According to a WTVA report, Jennings said, “I think the reason it’s being investigated is because, when it happened, the first two officers were on scene, and the ambulance and all were there. Then the other officer came on scene, and I understood, took his son away from the accident.”
Jennings was unable to be reached for comment on Thursday.
The name of the officer involved in the alleged incident is not being released.
Tupelo Police Chief Tony Carleton released a statement Thursday about the reported wreck.
“We are currently conducting an internal investigation of an incident that happened on the police force and I cannot comment further because it is under investigation,” he said.
In an phone interview, Carleton also said that when the investigation is finished, he will be more than happy to discuss the details.
