TUPELO – The city will spend nearly $1 million to fix a series of long-standing drainage problems throughout Tupelo.
City Council members voted unanimously last week to approve a $922,133 contract with Paul Smithey Construction to perform the work. The company had submitted the lowest bid in a competitive process.
“These are projects that have been on our list for a while,” said Tupelo Public Works Director Sid Russell.
Seven sites will be affected, including four located just off, or nearby, McCullough Boulevard. Two are located just off South Thomas Street, and one is near Carver Elementary School in the Park Hill neighborhood.
Each site suffers a different woe. Some have rusted and deteriorating drainage pipes that leak water and now are eroding the roads. Others’ pipes are too small to handle the new development in their areas and need to be replaced with larger ones. And some have always had inadequate drainage systems that will be repaired or replaced.
Such is the case on Hampton Avenue, Russell said.
“It’s an older neighborhood where … when it was developed, the drainage wasn’t connected and carried through in the appropriate manner,” he said. “So we’re going in and installing brand new pipes and drains. It will alleviate some street flooding and some personal property flooding.”
Work will begin early next month, although it’s still unclear which site will come first. Russell said the crews likely will complete one job before moving onto the next. Traffic delays aren’t anticipated as a result of the work.
All projects are slated to finish by Thanksgiving.
