TUPELO – Tupelo students will begin classes on Monday, Aug. 5 this fall, under the calendar adopted Tuesday by the district’s school board.
Teachers will report for the 2013-14 school year one week earlier, on Monday, July 29. Their annual Industry Education Day will be held on Aug. 1.
Students again will have three full weekends during Christmas break. The final day of classes for the first semester will be Wednesday, Dec. 18. They will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Staff also will report on Dec. 19 and Jan. 6.
Other school holidays include Labor Day (Sept. 2), Columbus Day (Oct. 14), Thanksgiving (Nov. 25-29), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 20), Spring Break (March 10-14) and Easter (April 18 and 21).
Students will have class on President’s Day on Feb. 17. That day and Oct. 17, will both be 60 percent days reserved for Parent-Teacher conferences.
Graduation will be May 16, 2014, and the final day of school will be Wednesday, May 21.
Staff will work on May 22 and 23.
Assistant Superintendent Diana Ezell said one reason for the early start date is the December state tests for high school students will be a week earlier than normal this year, Dec. 3-9. The early start will give the district 79 days of instruction before the test, she said.
Next school year is the final year before a new state law mandates that school can not begin before the third Monday in August. This year, that would have fallen on Aug. 19.
Weather make-up dates are Oct. 14, April 21 and May 22 through June 2.
