There’s still four and a half weeks before students head back to class in Tupelo, but school’s in for the district’s newly redesigned website.
“We’re so proud of the redesign, it should be so much easier to use,” said Kay Bishop, district public information officer. “It should make it easier to navigate and find what you need.”
There’s plenty of helpful back to school essentials including school supply lists and annual registration forms. The forms can’t be submitted electronically, but they can be filled out on the computer and printed to hand in.
“It should save them time at Back to School night,” Bishop said.
For high school seniors, the 2009-2010 culmination project manual is posted on the Tupelo High School. High school students and parents also sign up for the monthly Wavelink newsletter.
For people who haven’t met new Superintendent Dr. Randy Shaver, there’s a short video on the site’s front page where he outlines his approach.
Drop down menus and a popular pages box make it easy to find the 2009-2010 school calendar, staff directories and Board of Trustee information, said district webmaster Chris Crawford. A new more powerful search engine should make searches more efficient.
“The real power of the new website is the infrastructure,” Crawford said. “The old site couldn’t add videos to front page … It gives us the ability to really expand the website.”
One of the expansions is a searchable database of board policies, Crawford said. However, there is lag time between when the board passes a policy and when it appears on the website.
Each school has its own announcement, calendar and news item sections. The news items are archived. All of the content was moved over from the old website. So currently, many of the school handbooks date to 2008-2009 school year; the newest versions need board approval.
“The principals will be adding information,” Bishop said.
