Tupelo schools to host summer camps

TUPELO – This summer, Tupelo students can create LEGO robots, sail on the Titanic and travel to Australia.
The Tupelo Public School District is again offering “Camp Opportunity” for its students during the month of June. Students who completed kindergarten through sixth grade will be able to participate in 19 different week-long camps that will allow them to do the above activities or to make movies, solve imaginary crimes and play various games.
For the first time, there will also a camp for seventh- to 12th-graders, who will be able to create art pieces out of recycled objects during the week of June 18-22.
“Camp Opportunity will be a way to help students over the summer,” said Lawndale Elementary Assistant Principal Tyrone Catledge, who is the camp director. “It gives them an outlet and a way to continue with learning.”
Various camps will be held the weeks of June 4, 11, 18 and 25. Most of them will be at Lawndale, but the movie-making and recycled art programs will be at Tupelo High School. Cost is $80 per student for the first camp and $60 for each additional camp for the same child.
“We are trying to keep the learning going year round, instead of kids sitting and watching TV or playing Gameboy,” said Lawndale challenge teacher Teresa Gregory, who has directed the camp for the past several years but who is retiring at the end of the current school year. She has worked with Catledge to help him plan this year’s camp.
“As long as you can keep a child active in their learning, they enjoy it,” she said.
