TUPELO – A group of Tupelo High School seniors is hosting “Pay It Forward” day today as part of a senior project.
Blake Dixon, Karli Wood, Shivani Pacharne and Preston Rish are encouraging Tupelo residents to perform random acts of kindness for others throughout the day. The concept of “Pay It Forward” is to do a good deed for someone and encourage them to pay it forward to someone else, rather than repaying you.
“We are trying to get people to think about others,” Dixon said.
The seniors have raised more than $1,000 and will use the money to help others. During the day they will pay for random people’s groceries, gas, light bills and meals.
The group is asking others to participate and to post pictures of their involvement on social media tagged with #PayItForward2013. They’re also encouraging people to visit and join their Facebook page, “PayItForward Tupelo.”
Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton signed an official proclamation declaring today “Pay It Forward” day. Malco will show the 2000 movie “Pay It Forward” at 7 p.m. Tickets are $3, and the money will all go toward the group’s good deeds to help others. Tax-deductible donations also can be made through the Link Centre.
“We want this to become not just a one-day event, but something we can incorporate into our everyday lifestyles, doing things for others and expecting nothing in return,” Wood said.
As part of today’s events, Atlanta Bread will offer a free cookie with the purchase of a meal, and Bishop’s BBQ is offering free sweet tea all day.
