Tupelo sets 2011-12 school calendar

TUPELO – Tupelo students will begin the school year on Thursday, Aug. 4, and end it on May 18 under a school calendar that was adopted by the district’s board at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Those students will have 18 days of Christmas holidays, as classes will end on Dec. 16 and resume on Jan. 4. Teachers will return on Jan. 2 and have two days of preparation for the second semester without students.
Superintendent Randy Shaver said those days will be particularly helpful for high school teachers operating on a block schedule with courses lasting only one semester.
“They are essentially delivering a year of instruction in the first semester and a year of instruction in the second semester, and they will need that time to prepare,” he said.
Other holidays include Labor Day (Sept. 5), Thanksgiving (Nov. 21-25), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 16), Spring Break (March 12-16) and Easter (April 6-9).
Students will have a holiday on Columbus Day (Oct. 10), but faculty will still work on that day. Teachers must report on July 29, and will have four workdays before classes begin. Teachers will also have two workdays after the May 18 graduation (May 21-22).
The calendar denotes five 60-percent days when students will be released early for teacher training: Aug. 24, Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Jan. 25 and Feb. 22.
Pre-determined snow makeup days are Jan. 3 and April 9 (Easter Monday).
