TUPELO – On Elvis’ birthday, fans will be the ones getting the treats.
Saturday will be the 76th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s birth in East Tupelo. The Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum will celebrate by offering free admission to the grounds.
“We’re going to have birthday cake and punch at about 1 p.m.,” said Dick Guyton, executive director of the Elvis Presley Memorial Foundation.
Coupons for free entry to the birthplace will be in the Daily Journal today and Friday, as well as in Lee County Neighbors on Thursday.
“We expect it to be a low-key day,” Guyton said. “It’ll give us an opportunity to visit with folks.”
While that’s going on in Tupelo, Edison Peampña will be celebrating at Graceland in Memphis. Peampña was one of the Chilean miners trapped underground after a mine collapse.
During his months underground, Peampña jogged to music by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and led the other miners in Elvis sing-alongs.
Graceland arranged for Peampña’s all-expense-paid trip. On Sunday, he’s scheduled to visit the birthplace in Tupelo.
“He’s coming for a private tour of the birthplace,” Guyton said. “We’ll be happy to show him around.”
