TUPELO – Thirteen Tupelo High School seniors received special recognition on Monday for stellar academics.

Those students were honored for having been a Rotary Scholar for each of the six years they were eligible. Rotary Scholars are the top 30 students – plus ties – in grades seven and above.

This year’s group is among the largest to earn the prestigious distinction.

“It is an honor to get it, and the community really values it,” said Caroline Brown, one of the six-year scholars. “That makes it special.”

Joining Brown as Six-Year Rotary Scholars were Caitlin Bailey, Alex Cayson, Carley Cole, Betsy Crosswhite, Peyton Curtis, Maggie Davis, Sumner Fortenberry, Hailey Grisham, Jimmy Stone, Grant Thornton, Rachel Walden and Ashton Wedel.

“It signifies you were a cut above the rest,” said Fortenberry, when asked what made the honor meaningful.

Others in the group said the honor brought meaningful motivation. Bailey called it a point of “personal pride.”

“It keeps you on track so you don’t slack off,” Stone said. “It pushes you.”

The recognition is based on students’ grade-point averages, with extra weight being given to accelerated, pre-Advanced Placement and AP classes.

All 183 of this year’s Rotary Scholars were recognized by the Rotary Club of Tupelo during a ceremony at The Summit Center.
