KOSCIUSKO — The FBI will look into the circumstances surrounding the death of a black man in Attala County to determine if a hate crime occurred.
Daniel McMullen, special agent in charge of the FBI in Mississippi, tells the Clarion-Ledger that the case for now is being investigated by state authorities.
A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 1 for Frankie Barber and Barry Ware, both from Sallis. Each is charged with murder in the Jan. 7 slaying of Cedric Sharkey near Sallis. Barber and Ware are white.
Sheriff William Lee says the shooting appeared to have occurred after Barber and Ware confronted Sharkey, thinking he might have been involved in stealing iron or other scrap metal from Barber’s property.
Lee says Sharkey died of a gunshot wound in the chest.
