OXFORD – Lafayette County Chancery Clerk Sherry Wall has laid off two employees since last August amid a slump in filing fees for everything from land deeds to deeds of trust.
Wall says fee collections in her office are down 50 percent from what they were two years ago.
Wall’s salary and all of her employees’ salaries come out of the filing fees taken in by her office. Any surplus money that is left over by the end of the fiscal year is turned over to the county.
Wall says court fees were up a little but it wasn’t enough to make up the difference of the drastically reduced land and deeds of trust filing fees.
Walls says she now has just three employees.
