TOOMSUBA – Authorities said a volunteer firefighter and the man he was trying to save both drowned in a private pond in east Mississippi.
Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said the names of the victims were being withheld.
Calhoun said someone called 911 about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and said a man fell out of a fishing boat in a lake about two miles south of the Toomsuba exit of Interstate 20.
Calhoun said another fisherman in the boat tried to hold the first man’s head above water until help arrived. A firefighter who entered the water reached the man but went under.
He said both men were pulled to the shore but were unresponsive and later died at local hospitals.
