RIPLEY – Two Ripley men who took refuge in a storm shelter during recent threatening weather face charges after they stole several radios from the shelter when they left, Ripley Police Chief Scott White said.

Andy Winkles, 27, of Miss. 15 North, and Randy Barnes, 22, of County Road 500, are each charged with misdemeanor petty larceny charges. Bond was set at $1,000 on each man. Winkles made bond, but Barnes is being held, according to city records.

The two were in a basement storm shelter at Tippah County Hospital during tornado warnings May 25. They saw eight hand-held radios and chargers stored in a box in the shelter and stole them, according to Police Investigator Scott Watson.

Two of the radios were later turned over to authorities by one of the men’s girlfriend. Police soon recovered the other six radios, which had been sold to private individuals for about $20 each, the investigator said.

The equipment, which has a total value of about $396, has been returned to the hospital, Watson said.
