SARDIS — Panola County Coroner Gracie Gulledge says 74-year-old Mary Evelyn Brower and her 6-month-old, great-granddaughter, Bell LeCompte, were killed after a tree fell Monday on their camper in Panola County.

Brower, of Clarksdale, and the child, who was from Alabama, were on vacation at Sardis Lake staying at the Oak Grove campground when the fast-moving storm hit the area.

Gulledge tells The Commercial Appeal that when rescuers cut through the tree, they found Brower was holding the baby.

Brower was pronounced dead on the scene. The baby was taken to Tri-Lakes Hospital in Batesville where she later died.

Gulledge says there were five people inside the camper. Two were not hurt. An 8-year-old boy was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis with nonlife-threatening injuries.
