WEST POINT – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday endorsed Democratic U.S. Rep. Travis Childers in the 1st District congressional race.
The endorsement was presented in West Point, where Childers began his districtwide “Putting North Mississippi First” eight-day tour.
In its support, the chamber cited Childers’ support of pro-business issues. Childers’ re-election, the chamber said, “will help produce sustained economic growth and help create more jobs.”
Childers faces Republican Alan Nunnelee in the Nov. 2 election. Nunnelee’s campaign spokesman Morgan Baldwin said the endorsement “is a bit puzzling,” citing Childers’ vote for the stimulus bill, which was designed to create jobs.
“But instead,” Baldwin said, “the 1st Congressional District has lost 22,000 jobs since he was elected.”
