U.S. Highway 78 wreck kills Myrtle man

An accident Friday on U.S. Highway 78 in Union County claimed the life of a Myrtle man and left two children in serious condition.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol said William Hale, 57, was westbound in a 1987 Toyota when he collided with another westbound vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet driven by 18-year-old Clayton Mayer of Potts Camp. Hale’s vehicle overturned after the collision and landed in the median.
Hale, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two children, whom the MHP did not identify, were in his car and suffered serious injuries.
One was taken to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis and the other to Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany. Both children also were unbuckled.
Mayer was uninjured.
The accident, which occurred about 1:15 p.m., remains under investigation.
