UMMC reports $85M in grants, contracts

By The Associated Press

JACKSON — A record $85 million in grants and contracts has helped the University of Mississippi Medical Center conduct research into cancer and diabetes and finance health care outreach programs.

Over the past several years, grants and contracts — collectively known as sponsored projects — have increased from $39.7 million in FY 2008 to $75.7 million in FY 2010. The most recent figure of $85 million in fiscal 2011 continues the trend.

Dr. John Hall, associate vice chancellor for research, says the money allows UMMC to investigate the causes of health issues, creates jobs and trains the next generation of scientific researchers.

In fiscal 2011, which ended June 30, the Medical Center received 271 grants and contracts —down from the previous year’s 305, but an increase of nearly $9.3 million in value.
