MYRTLE – A deputy with the Union County Sheriff’s Department died Wednesday night as the result of a one-car accident.

Deputy Clinton H. Frazier was pronounced dead on the scene by the Union County coroner.

According to Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards, the crash occurred about 9 p.m. on U.S. Highway 178, inside the Myrtle town limits.

The cause of the accident was unknown Thursday afternoon, Edwards said.

“We’re not sure whether he turned on the highway to pursue a vehicle or what,” Edwards said. “His patrol car did leave the road, however.”

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

“Since it happened on a state highway and because he was one of our own, it is better that they conduct the investigation,” Edwards said.

He went on to say that it is a loss to the county and to the sheriff’s department, as well as to Frazier’s family and children.

Grief counselors were at the department Thursday to talk to Edwards, dispatchers who were on duty at the time, his partners and everyone in the department.

Frazier was employed at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center before joining the sheriff’s department in 2012.

He is married to Christy Frazier and together they have three daughters, Chloe, Cameran and Carlie.
