TUPELO – The United Way of Northeast Mississippi has filled all 4,000 spots for students in need of backpacks and school supplies.
The group and an army of volunteers will hand out the supplies Saturday at the BancorpSouth Arena at United Way’s second annual back-to-school resource fair.
Only students who pre-registered for backpacks will be able to get them Saturday, said Susie Morgan, the marketing director at United Way. All of the slots filled up by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
United Way still is in need of sponsorships for supplies. It’s $10 to sponsor a backpack. As of Thursday afternoon, United Way had about $24,000 in donations. It needs $40,000.
To donate, call (662) 841-9133 or visit www.unitedwaynems.org.
The fair is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Pre-registered students must be present to get a backpack Saturday and they must have an adult with them.
Students who didn’t register in advance won’t be able to get a backpack, but there will be other things to do.
United Way will have a limited number of vouchers for free haircuts. Plus, vendors will have free vision and hearing screenings. Nearly 50 booths will be set up and manned by agencies geared at kids, their parents and their grandparents.
The event at BancorpSouth Arena also will have inflatable bounce houses and other activities for the kids.
