TUPELO – The United Way of Northeast Mississippi is getting ready to celebrate the completion of its 50th campaign.
Invitations will start going out next week for the Feb. 17 event. Anyone is welcome, especially agency representatives, volunteers and United Way donors.
Susie Morgan, UW’s director of marketing and communications, said the event will be a “gigantic” birthday party for the organization.
“We’ll be looking back at where we’ve been and where we’re going,” she said.
UW also will give out about 200 campaign awards at the event.
Morgan said that, as of this week, the organization has surpassed its $2.2 million goal and had raised its largest amount to date.
“Our campaign slogan this year was ‘let’s do more,'” she said. “Because of the community this year, we can do more.”
The money is distributed based on need to 65 nonprofit agencies in Lee, Chickasaw, Union, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Itawamba and Tishomingo counties. Supported agencies include Meals on Wheels, The Salvation Army and various food pantries.
Morgan said more than 100,000 people benefit from funds pledged through the United Way.
“Northeast Mississippians are really good about taking care of the people around them,” she said.
