UPDATE: Alcorn County school leader says proms may be left to parents

By The Associated Pres

CORINTH — The Alcorn County School District may stop sponsoring prom, says superintendent Stacy Suggs.

The Daily Corinthian reports Suggs told school board members this week that several high school principals have expressed a desire to turn the prom over to parents. Suggs says he will meet with principals soon to talk more about the idea.

Suggs says concerns have raised since the courtroom battle involving the Itawamba County School District and a lesbian high school student who wanted to take a female date to the school-sponsored prom.

Suggs says there are legal liability concerns, such as alcohol use. He says if the district does not sponsor the prom they cannot be held liable for anything that might happen.
