ASHLAND – Two people died in an early morning house fire today in Benton County.
Coroner Bob Riles said the fire occurred in the north central part of the county. He did not identify the victims.
The fire, he said, occurred around 1 a.m. and destroyed the house. The bodies weren’t discovered until firefighters returned later in the morning to check for hot spots.
Riles said the bodies were covered by the rubble and firefighters didn’t see them when they first responded to the fire, while it was still dark.
Riles said the fire is under investigation by his office, the state fire marshal and the sheriff’s office.
The bodies were being taken to Jackson for autopsies.
