GUNTOWN – Guntown Municipal Clerk Shelly McKee said Wednesday morning that there is still a tie for the fifth board of aldermen seat, even after the affidavit ballots were counted.
McKee said George “Mickey” Kuykendall and Jacqueline Shumpert are tied with 120 votes each for seat. McKee had hoped that nine affidavit ballots would break the tie left after the general election. Yet, only one ballot was counted this morning. McKee said several of the ballots were disqualified because the voters were not properly registered in the municipality 30 days before the election.
What happens next is still up in the air.
McKee said her regulations say that the vote should be decided by a “drawing of the lots.” She lodged a question with the Secretary of State’s office and was directed to the the state attorney general’s office. She hopes to hear back today.
