TUPELO – A Tupelo Police car and a BMW X-series SUV were involved in a car accident on Monday morning at the intersection of Green and Main streets.
The accident occurred at the edge of a zone where Main Street was restriped from four lanes to three on Sunday. Tupelo Police Maj. Jackie Clayton said the officer whose vehicle was struck wrote a ticket to the BMW driver for running a red light.
“We don’t usually write a ticket on an accident we don’t work, but since he witnessed it, he can write it,” Clayton said.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said since a ticket was written by an officer no further investigation will be done by his department.
There were no injuries.
The police car was traveling south on Green Street and was turning left onto Main. The BMW was traveling west on Main Street. The BMW was determined not drivable and was left at Firestone, Johnson said.
Since the driver was given a ticket for running a red light, it does not appear the accident had any connection to the new Main Street three-lane configuration.
