Tupelo Historic Preservation Commission has denied the demolition permit for the Spain House.
Tupelo’s Historic Preservation Commission met today at 5 p.m. to consider Calvary Baptist Church’s request for a permit to demolish the historic Spain House on Main Street.
The church has attempted unsuccessfully to sell or give the house away since buying it as part of a multi-lot purchase in 2006, saying revamping it for church use would be prohibitively expensive.
Calvary would like to have the property for other church-related development, but the commission has opposed demolition of the century-old building.
Parties involved have been working the last several weeks to find a solution involving the city, but there’s been no final word on those negotiations.
