UPDATE: Federal funds for Miss. schools approved

JACKSON — Mississippi has received approval of its application for $97.8 million in federal stimulus money for its schools.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made the announcement Tuesday in a news release. Mississippi was one of seven states and the District of Columbia to receive application approval.

Gov. Haley Barbour applied for the money last week. The $97.8 million is Mississippi’s share of education funding from a $26.1 billion jobs package recently passed by Congress.

Barbour sent a letter to school superintendents reminding them the federal money can only be used to hire or rehire employees.
