MYRTLE – Back-to-back fires in two parts of Union County destroyed a house and a truck shop Monday morning.
Firefighters were called to County Road 206 in the New Harmony community where they found a home ablaze. The call came in about 10:10 a.m.
“It was fully involved when they got there,” said Jimmy Edwards, chief deputy for the Union County Sheriff’s Department. “It was a total loss.”
While crews from the east side of the county fought that blaze, others from the west side were called to County Road 360, where a truck shop owned by Neeley Trucking was also totally involved. A truck was inside the burning building, Edwards said, along with diesel fuel and other chemicals, all of which made the fire particularly difficult to fight.
“We’re still letting it cool down,” he said. “It’ll be tomorrow before we can get somebody inside to determine the cause of the fire.”
