UPDATE: Fire in Starkville injures 1, leave 31 homeless

By The Assocated Press

STARKVILLE — Authorities say a firefighter was injured and 31 people lost their homes after a fire ripped through Crossgates Apartments in Starkville.

Starkville Fire Chief Rodger Mann told the Columbus Commercial Dispatch that the firefighter was injured Tuesday when ammunition in one of the apartments went off in the fire. He says a bullet fragment struck the firefighter in the chest, but he wasn’t seriously injured.

The fire started around 6 p.m. in one building and quickly spread.

Mann says fire officials still have not determined a cause of the blaze, but it appears to be accidental.

The Oktibbeha County chapter of the American Red Cross was working to find shelter for some of the displaced families.
