UPDATE: Longtime local Baptist leader dies after being pulled from ocean in Myrtle Beach

The Rev. Bill Smith, former missions director of the Lee County Baptist Association, died today while swimming in the ocean with his granddaughter in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Myrtle Beach police Captain David Knipes said that around 12:30 lifeguards noticed a commotion in the water and when they reached Smith he had no pulse. They pulled him from the water and EMS continued CPR while Smith was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center where he later died.
Smith, 74, was one of the founding members of the Greater Tupelo Ministerial Alliance and throughout his career worked to establish relationships among people of faith across racial and denominational lines.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Tupelo.
