UPDATE: Man accused in Jackson officer's death seeks mental exam

JACKSON — A man accused in the death of a Jackson police officer has pleaded not guilty to a capital murder charge.

The Clarion-Ledger reports 24-year-old Latwan Dupree Smith appeared Monday in Hinds County Court. He’s accused in the Friday shooting death of officer Glen Agee.

Hinds County Public Defender Alison Kelly says she will ask for Smith’s trial to be moved to another county and has requested a full psychological evaluation.

Agee and two other Jackson police officers were taking Smith to the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond when police say Smith opened the door of the patrol car by reaching through an open window. Officers say Smith escaped and ran. Agee ran after him and was later found shot in the face.
