HOOVER, Ala. – Family members of an immigrant who is believed to have accidentally started a deadly fire at a Hoover motel say he has left the country.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Tuesday that the family of 55-year-old Dhirajlal Bhagat says he may have gone back to his home land of India. The live-in employee at the Days Inn South is blamed for the January blaze that killed four college freshmen from Mississippi University of Women.

No criminal charges have been brought or are expected in the case.

Attorneys who brought negligence and breach of contract lawsuits against Bhagat and motel officials are searching for the immigrant so that they can notify him of the claims as well as question him. Authorities believe he accidentally started the fire with an incense.
