MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Federal health officials have asked Memphis’ LeBonheur (leh-BON’-uhr) Children’s Medical Center to send a medical team to Haiti to aid young earthquake injury victims.

Hospital spokeswoman Jennilyn Utkov told The Commercial Appeal on Monday the hospital will send trauma surgeons, orthopedic doctors and anesthesiologists who will treat primarily injuries caused by crushing. The doctors will be rotated on two-week assignments. Hospital officials will decide how many physicians will be sent.

Utkov said LeBonheur has also been asked for supplies and equipment.

The request was made by the office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
