UPDATE: Millsaps president says she is leaving the school

JACKSON – Millsaps College President Frances Lucas says she is leaving the school after nearly a decade to spend more time with her children. Lucas’ son, Michael, is 17; daughter Anna Catherine is 15.

She did not dismiss the idea of accepting a presidency at another college.

Lucas’ announcement Thursday comes after reports of friction between herself and Millsaps faculty. Some professors recently circulated a petition on campus, disapproving of how Lucas is leading the college. The petition is said to have as many as 50 signatures. There are 97 full-time faculty members at the private Jackson college, which has about 1,200 students.

Lucas is the college’s 10th president and first woman in that role. Her last day will be June 30, 2010.
