JACKSON — Members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation have responded favorably to President Barack Obama’s decision to expand offshore oil and natural gas exploration.
U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, a Democrat, says he has long supported increasing America’s energy supply through new oil drilling. He says the result would be new jobs at home and less reliance on foreign oil.
Republican Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker are giving initial support to Obama’s proposal and look forward to more details of the plan.
Cochran says work in the Gulf of Mexico has proven that offshore energy production can be done responsibly with broad economic and job benefits.
Wicker says an expansion of offshore drilling would create American jobs, increase government revenue and ease our nation off of its costly reliance on foreign energy.
