JACKSON — The Mississippi Senate Judiciary B Committee has passed a bill that would require a doctor’s prescription to purchase cold medicine containing the decongestant pseudoephedrine, which is a key ingredient in the illegal drug methamphetamine.
The bill passed Wednesday after the committee heard from law enforcement agents, judges and a representative of drug manufacturers.
A House version of the proposal passed earlier this week in the House Judiciary A Committee.
Opponents say requiring a prescription for cold medicine could create a burden on the uninsured in the state. But supporters say the change could put a dent it the escalating meth problem.
