The Tupelo Police Department received a “robbery in progress” alarm at Merchants and Farmers Bank on South Gloster at 1:50 p.m. Friday.

A citizen saw what was happening and also called 911.

Cory Baker of 2415 Danny Street in Tupelo has been arrested and charged with armed robbery. He was previously arrested on armed robbery and carjacking charges in 2004, according to police.

As officers arrived they observed the suspect exiting the bank with a bag and a weapon. The suspect was arrested after a short foot chase.

Police recovered a weapon, dye stained money and a ski mask at the scene. The dye pack apparently exploded while Baker was try to leave the scene.

Witnesses said the suspect entered the bank with a mask on and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at the teller. The suspect then handed the teller a bag and demanded money. The suspect retrieved the money and exited the bank.

No one was injured.
