UPDATE: Obama to nominate Wicker as U.N. representative

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama today announced his intention to nominate Sen. Roger Wicker of Tupelo as a representative to the United Nations.

Also to be nominated are Sen. Jean Shaheen on New Hampshire, businesswoman Carol Fulp and former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels.

Wicker and Shaheen will maintain their Senate roles while working with U.N. committees.

According to Wicker’s office, appointees serve for the three-month main portion of the U.N. General Assembly session, which is mid-September through mid-December.

Members are assigned to follow the activities of one of the General Assembly’s main committees.
