Phil Turner, a rising senior guard for Mississippi State, is no longer on the team. He learned two days ago, via a letter to his home in Grenada, that MSU has pulled his scholarship for 2010-11.
The Clarion-Ledger first reported it.
Turner told the NEMS Daily Journal he was surprised to learn he had lost his scholarship.
“I’ve been calling coach for two days since I got the letter,” Turner said. “I finally got a phone call back this evening. Basically he was saying it was rumored that I wasn’t coming back, so that’s how I lost it.”
MSU coach Rick Stansbury released a statement Saturday saying: “This past season Phil had indicated to the basketball staff, compliance office and others he didn’t plan on coming back for a fifth year. He chose not to enroll in summer school and didn’t attend our year-end meetings, which forced us to make other plans. Phil is a great kid and I appreciate his efforts at Mississippi State. I will do everything I can to help him. We wish him the best.”
