Update 8:55 p.m.: Police said the packages were two black backpacks. One was empty. The other had a shirt and a pair of pants in it. They were placed next to each other.

Update 8:42 p.m.: The area has been cleared and deemed safe. The roads are now opened again.

Law enforcement has the Tupelo City Hall area quarantined for what is believed to be two suspicious packages near a bench at the fountain at Fairpark.
One package is in front of the other package.
Maj. Jackie Clayton said the Tupelo Police Department bomb squad has shut off several city blocks, including Main Street. It’s shut from Front to Elizabeth streets.
“With all the things going on, we want to deem it safe,” Clayton said.
At 6:45 p.m. the call came in to 911 where someone in the Fairpark area noticed the packages.
A concert is ongoing nearby at the BancorpSouth Arena with several thousand people in attendance. The arena is not included in the perimeter.
